Parents can view portions of their child’s academic record via the internet

Under the federal law, parents can see portions of their child’s academic records. However, some schools will not give parents access to these records. They must give notice to the parent, and this is not always possible. In most cases, the school can’t request a child’s SSN. In these situations, the parent may ask the school to make the record available to them.

A federal law, the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), protects the privacy of student educational records. It mandates that educational institutions disclose student information only with permission from the student. This permission must be expressed by the student. The U.S. Department of Education oversees the official student academic records. The office of the registrar provides a variety of information, including details about the privacy law and specific information for parents.
